I enjoy using Keynote by Apple. In fact I use the software for almost all of my presentations. Haiku Deck is also an excellent application to use for keynote presentations. Occasionally I import the beautiful images from Haiku Deck to Keynote. I rarely use PowerPoint, however, have taught it within many lessons.

I am aware that many classrooms may be subjecting students to "Death by PPT" from an early age. Many activities are enhanced through use of technology, however, there are many occasions where students learn more through using cardboard and art supplies and completing project tasks.

Technology should be used during circumstances where it provides optimum learning. It is most influential in addressing achievement standards and fulfilling educational outcomes. Depending on the planned activity and also varying circumstance technology can hinder student learning, prevent creativity and limit collaboration. An experienced and skilled educator knows when to incorporate technology within a lesson and is aware of when access to technology should be delayed. As identified in The Art and Science of Teaching by Dr. Robert Marzano this is known as "withitness".

My Year 5 class are researching local history and recording their findings as a timeline. In previous years the assessment task involved creating a historical timeline of the Sunshine Coast using PowerPoint. I considered that decided the task boring and decided to alter the project. Rather than full reliance on technology the students would use a blend of research and cardboard construction. In result the project would be more engaging and draw on different skills sets and allow students to design, research, experiment, actualize and moderate.

Over a period of a week students brought in cardboard tubes and boxes. I prompted their thinking using Edmodo to posted links and videos to flip the classroom. Students then accessed Sunshine Coast Library to conduct research and gathered historical content and images. Rather than placing the images into a presentation they printed the photos and pasted them onto a strip of paper to create a timeline. Under each image the students recorded the time of the event, observations and significant cultural, social and environmental changes within the local area. Throughout the timeline a process of change is observed.



Modification of tasks that enable students to explore their personal creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness is a step forward. The project provides opportunities for students to design, construct and improve their simply machines. In addition the task appeals to numerous learning styles and on many levels covers multiple curriculum areas simultaneously. I encourage educators to utilize recyclable materials within a blended learning scenario to enrich learning and promote engagement.
